Art and Culture in the Jahrhunderthalle Bochum

The Jahrhunderthalle in Bochum is one of the great highlights in the Ruhr area for the scene of art and culture. The Ruhr area is still perceived as an industrial region with coal mining and steel production plants. The downfall of these industries has left a multitude of industrial buildings that could not be reused according to their original determination. New usages for these building were investigated. An extremely positive example is the Jahrhunderthalle Bochum which is the main concert and event hall in the Ruhr area with regional and international attractivity.

The original gas-fired powerhouse has been transformed into one of the distinguished festival and concert halls of Europe. A lighthouse for the culture and a home for spectacular concert events with international stars from classical opera like Anna Netrebko, and from the realm of contemporary Jazz with the WDR Big Band and invited guest musicians.

The Jahrhunderthalle is also home of the Ruhrtriennale which takes place in the later summertime every year.

The main theatre of Bochum also belongs to the renowned attractions and highlights of the cultural scene of Bochum which has been a center of experimental and critical theatre work since the days of Peter Zadek.
